Here at JH Media Group, we are constantly looking for ways we can improve on our skills. Often times, you go to a website and bad design just slaps you in the face. So we thought we can put together some common mistakes developers make when designing a website. Here are just a few!

  • Clutter!

Too much clutter can really throw all the work you did on the theme of your website out of the window. When a page has too many words and pictures, people will often get lost in the extra information and don’t see the point you are trying to make. You want your website to be concise and to the point so that people can quickly see what your company is all about in their first look. Remember, whitespace is your friend in this case! The eye can only take in so much information, so make sure you only use information that is necessary to communicate the objective of your website.

  • Too many colors or not enough

Picking the right colors for your website can be a difficult task. There are so many color combinations to consider that it can give you a headache. Often, developers tend to stick to blue and white. While this generally appeals to most people, it can also be boring at the same time. Looking on the other side of the coin, having too many crazy colors can make your website look unprofessional. Resources such as COLOURlovers can help you choose a color combination that will work best for your website. You don’t want to use too many colors, either. Try to stick to 3-4 different colors, as more can confuse visitors to your website.

  • Hard-to-find links

Links are a very important element in a website. You want to make sure all links are easily distinguishable from other text. Have you ever visited a website and tried to click on something you thought was a link, but really, it wasn’t? Try to stay away from underlining things that are not links, as this may confuse visitors. Also, try to stay away from blue fonts as this may also confuse visitors into thinking any text in this color is a link as well. This looks like a link, doesn’t it?  Stay away from this if at all possible.

  • Not including a blog

You may be asking yourself this: “Why should I spend more time on my website to write blog articles? What should I even write about?”  The main reason for a blog is to help drive traffic to your website and improve search engine rankings. By writing a blog, you can inform visitors about recent news for your business, and include any information about new technologies that have a direct correlation to your business. Doing this will help others see that you are a professional in your industry, and that can be an effective marketing tool. With a blog, you can market your business, establish relationships with your customers, and also build trust and credibility along the way.

These are just a few of the common mistakes web developers make. By fixing these mistakes, you can help your website succeed and, ultimately, your business. JH Media Group helps businesses and organizations succeed through creative web strategy, design, and development. Come to us for all your web development needs!
